Ok question.,

I will have about a total of 250 to 300 bucks to get a new lathe with next week. I need to get back to turning! So as much as I would love to grab the rikon for 279.00 that wouldnt leave me with the $$ needed for the mandrel and bushings etc. to get started again.

So i was thinking of grabbing the PSI 1/2 HP mini lathe? Any thoughts on this?

I have the Rikon... Don't think you can go wrong with it IMHO. Save a bit more for the other items needed. You will regret it if you get a lathe that can not make other than pens in the long run. I have turned up to 10" bowls on my Rikon rather nicely.

I know, I loved my rikon, it was the first lathe I ever turned on.. I might just get it and learn to turn between centers... :)

I have a line on a jet mini as well, hopefully its still available, otherwise I will have to think really hard...

Buy the Rikon and you will not need another lathe for many years, if you buy the underpowered cheap lathe, you will be disappointed in it shortly.

I have a line on a jet 1014 for 190.00 used of course. If that comes through that is what I will be getting, along with a Teknatool Precision Midi Chuck for 55.00. That leaves me some cash to get a cheap set of tools for now again, and a drill chuck, some kits and blanks and its off to the races!

If that falls though, I will most likely just pick up the rikon again, since I know that is a great lathe, and see how next month goes for the rest.

heck, with the bandsaw and tablesaw, I could just start praticing segmenting wood and turning between centers to see how it looks... :)

I started cheep with HF for $119, Then Wanted better right away, went carbatech $239 (toosmall) now I am looking at Rikon or just step up to a full size Jet and get it over with.
Point is if I knew then, what I know now, I would have had a great lathe for about the same money that I have already spent and not still be looking.

Going next thursday to pick up the lathe, chuck(s) and he is even giving me a craftsman router as well!

Now time to start looking for blanks, oh and get the shed converted to a workshop...

Check out this link, in the July/August newsletter it has a slightly used Jet 1014 for $250.00 perhaps you can get it shipped free. Looks like a good deal.

I am getting locally a jet 1014 for 190.00, a jacobs chuck for 15.00 and a Teknatool Precision Midi Chuck for 55.00. Picking them up on thursday next week.

Guy is a member on another WW site and even giving me a craftsman router he doesnt use anymore with a few accesories.

I have to say, i've been around a lot of different groups in my life, and woodworkers are by far, the kindest, most helpfull I have ever seen.

Now the fun part starts, the waiting....
