I have been wanting to build something "big" is what I have been telling my girlfriend. So my son and I will be building a 16' long cedar strip canoe. These are pics of the strong-back and the strong-back with stations temporarily attached. We are doing everything including milling our cedar strips. It will be bead and cove western red cedar with bits of mahogany thrown in. I found an old electric tea kettle today so we will be bending stems this weekend. Thanks for looking.

That looks like a great project. If you haven,t worked with much western red cedar I would caution you to be sure to use a good particle face mask. I had a bad reaction after making a bunch of planters out of red cedar several years ago. I had flu like for weeks and the doctor whose father had worked in a cedar shake mill for years said that it was a common problem with some workers.

Awesome project.

I put together a "steaming" station in the kitchen when I built a few treasure chest. I had to bend some of the strips that went across the top of the chests.

Please post progress pics!

Bending the stems

Well I managed to get the stems bent for the canoe this weekend. The first picture is of my steamer, an old tea/coffee pot and a piece of pvc pipe. The second picture I asked my son to hold the stem up for pictures, he couldn't take a minute from his phone to do this as you can see. You also can see all the random clamps I have.

Also in the first picture you will see the beginnings of a table my girlfriend has decided to get started. We have two silos at work and the structure between the two was falling down. It was torn down and was all going to be burned so we rescued some of the wood. It was built of cypress and pine back in the 40's and we couldn't let them burn it all. The center post of this 5' round table is going to be nine 4x4's glued together and turned. That is going to be the fun part. I will post pics of that project when I really get started.

thanks for looking

Coming along nicely. My setup looked alot like yours except mine was laid more horizontal and on a slight incline. Well your son is out there helping so that the main thing. Hopefully as it progresses he gets more into it and isn't quite as interested in being "glued" to his phone. lol Keep up the good work!
