WOW! Just polished up some scrap black walnut pieces that I shot yesterday afternoon w/precatalyzed lacquer. Very impressed. Deep, glossy , almost "wet" look that I have been after for my pens. These are my very first attempts at both airbrushing and a lacquer finish, so I was prepared to be disappointed. Finished to 600 grit sandpaper, then 2 coats of Mylands Sanding Sealer, then 4 medium/heavy coats of lacquer, spaced 15 minutes apart per coat. Let dry about 24 hours, then wet sanded (water as wetting agent) MM from 1500-12000. Again, looks really great on the black walnut, I have some cocobolo (my favorite non-stabilized wood)I just shot, w/a couple of different preliminary steps to test out.

Thanks to redfishSC and jeffj13 for the basics on precat lacquer and encouragement to use an airbrush.

If anyone is interested, I'll try to write up my experience as a noob airbrush/lacquer finisher.

Good to hear your luck with precatalyzed lacquer. Having used both precat and postvcat lacquers in the past you may wanted to let it cure for a week or more before rubing out the finish. Even on small objects such as pens.

Thanks for the encouragement [:D] to post more information. I have to work at the hospital tomorrow, then driving to Texas for an Xmas thing w/the inlaws this weekend, so it will be at least Monday before I can post anything w/pics. The cocobolo I shot yesterday looks good, although I haven't polished it yet, so thats encouraging.
