I started with Friction Polish I I still like the results of the high shine. I have actually put 6 coats of the polish on one slim line pen. And it still shines. Then I heard about CA then CA/BLO then there was lacquer. Well I turned three different pen blanks and the results And the envelope please ;
1. CA method I applied it every 10 minutes. Used a new spot on the viva towel. Applied it until the towel showed signs of smoke.
result Just CA I have 10 coats on. (All thin) after 5 coats I sanded down the finish with MM 1500- 12,000. I had several problems with the CA grabbing. I continued through the grabbing part I did not use any accelerator. The 5 finishing coats were sanded/really polished out the CA 1/2 of the blank has a perfect finish. The other side shows a haze. So tomorrow, I will sand down the entire finish and start over. The CA is really smells bad. Yet, it was fast, to apply. The CA had the brightest shine. Almost to bright.
2.) CA/Blo
result â€" I have mixed results with CA/BLO I need to practice with this combination. Practice practice and practice
3.) Lacquer Deft (gloss) brush able
I just dip my clean rags into the lacquer and turn the lathe on at its slowest speed 820rpm. It dries in 30 minutes.
result -- I have placed 4 coats of lacquer on the blank. Sanded the finish down with mm to 12,000. the finished shows a stain finish. Tomorrow I will place 4 more coats of lacquer finish so far it looks good. No real smell of lacquer , but beware my garage door is open and only 8ft away. After a night of drying I sand with 800 grit and place another 4 coats of lacquer. The third morning I sanded with mm the finish out to 12,000 and then buffed the lacquer out I have added another 5 coats of lacquer. I can feel the thickness of the lacquer.
The brush--able lacquer seems to go on very easily. Several drops on the viva towel and run the lathe at it slowest speed. â€" let dry and a little sand with 600grit and redo After the 5th day I then sanded with mm to 12,000 and then buffed with white dia. The pen blank has this beautiful high shine yet it does not overpower the grain of the wood.
Summary The CA and CA/BLO vapers were really bad. The fumes just went through my mask. Yet, the lacquer did not. The lacquer finish was just what this doctor wanted in the finish of my pens.
I just to thank all those wood turners who have been active on this site. I have learned great deal-- what I learned is I still do not know enough.
Thanks again
