Some people use poly or lacquer, some dipped , some sprayed and some brushed. Does the thickness of the afore mentioned finshes cause the pen to be proud or do you compensate before you apply said finish.if not how do you make up for the extra thicknes of the coating?

Yea, you really should be at the measurement of the hardware when your finish is done and sanded. A set of calipers is best for this. Turn the blank and measure it. Write that down and apply your finish. Once it's finished and all polished, measure your finish. This will give you the best idea of how thick YOUR finish is. Do this a few times to get an idea of just how thick they tend to be and you will know exactly where to stop the diameter.

Now keep in mind, softer wood sands faster than hard woods and you have to get a "feel for it" You need to know where to stop with rougher grits so you end up correct at the end of the sanding steps. This is the challange! Good luck, and get a set of calipers, they are the best tool in your shop. [;)]
