Something in this red-dyed maple burl wasn't compatible with CA glue and after sanding it down twice and using my normal CA finishing method I gave up and decided to try dipping it in water based polyurethane which is a technique shared by rd_ab_penman. I diluted the poly about 10% with water and the dipping and blotting was simple enough. I waited a day between coats but probably could have done them sooner. The finish is smooth and glossy. I didn't follow Les's advice to sand the barrel down to make up for the extra thickness of the finish and as a result it's a tad too thick and it's noticeable at the ends.

I'll be trying this again and will compensate for the thicker finish.

Very well matched and the shine is very deep! I see some orange-peel in the surface. I Is that an illusion produced by the light/photo?

That's is a great shine.
