I've been using bees wax to plug my tube ends prior to glue up. With the cold weather that doesn't work so good anymore. I've read people using plumbers putty but that seems to oily to me. Is there something out there I don't know about?

P.S. I found this great epoxy at Hobby Lobby, full bond strength in 20 min.
Anyone else ever use this?

I use dental wax. Make your dentist a pen, and I bet he will give you enough to last a life time. It works very well. 1/8 thick, some what soft. Easy to press tubes, in colder weather.

Don't know about using epoxy to plug tubes. Seems like an expensive overkill. Base plate dental wax is the best way to go....clean, simple, no wait time, effective and not expensive. It is available from dental labs, your dentist maybe or from http://www.arizonasilhouette.com

But, hey, give that great epoxy a try and report back.

Funny as it may sound, I use regular old Playdow (sp). Works well unless you leave the container open. DAMHIKT Just don't plug tubes you're gonna use hours later. DAMHIKTE

I've only used Mannies epoxy.
 
I went a different route.

I'm doing my casting in PVC pipe, so I made tight fitting plugs from 3/4 delrin rod. One in each end. The weight of the delrin doesn't allow it to float, the 3/4 diameter of the rod keeps the tube nearly centered in the pipe (which is slightly larger than the rods so no issues there). This could be adapted to flat casting too.

That epoxy should work just fine for gluing tubes in, It will take some time to harden. I like 5 min. epoxy. But that will work just fine.

BTW, dental base plate wax is still the best to plug tubes. Use what ever epoxy you want.

Guys... Please realize that writing in text is very difficult to bring across emotion and meaning in text, especially without writing a ton of extra text.

I'm guessing that MAB meant this (the italics are MY interpretation):

The two comments are not related. (Hopefully that clears things up)

Don - I hope you forgive MAB, I'm sure he didn't mean it.
Phillip - Your post is an example of "piling on".. MAB is new, but not much newer than you and he already apologized - no need to give your "slap on the hand" comment.

Please try and not read so much negative into posts right away everyone... Give the benefit of the doubt and things will go much better.

MAB - as to tubes, I don't plug mine - I use CA and just clean out any extra glue with a little knife.
 
I use plumbers putty to seal the end of the tube. I roll it out to about a 1/8" thickness and then put the tube into the flat putty. I then use the eraser end of a pencil to tighten the putty inside the tube - tap the pencil inside the tube before you lift it up. If you don't tighten the putty it has a tendency to fall out or move back when you push the tube in.

I don't plug my tubes prior to glue up as I don't see cleaning out any small amount of glue in the tubes to be that big of a deal. I would imagine that any clay or wax would work fine, however.

I use that epoxy. It works just fine.
