Hello, I have made a few pens with my new bushings from JohnyCNC they are great. I have used plexi to finish, it took a few times until I figured out how to lay the stuff down. Well I got it down, wet sanded, polished with novus and love the finish. I used a razor blade to score the bushings so they will let go of the blanks(no problems yet), I made 3 pens and 1 of them the finish lifted on the end and caused it to look white. For some reason I did not get good tooth for the finish to grab on to??? HELP, Thanks, Victor

Victor,

I don't know if this will work, but it is worth a try. CAREFULLY put some thin CA at the end of the blank where the finish lifted. The thin CA will wick into the space and may resolve the problem.

I had that problem about 30% -40% of the time with CA and oily blanks - UNTIL I started using the mandrel-less or dead center method. Absolutely no problems since then. I also used a razor to cut, but still had the problem. I used nylon washers/spacers and still had the problem. But no more.

I have the Delrin bushings from Johnycnc I just seen everyone uses them for the CA finish. I thought that the acetone in the Plexi might eat the Delrin bushings??? I guess I just assumed, if it doesn't then I have them to try. Jonycncs bushings are great, what a major difference from a mandrel(for me anyways). I'm sure some do great with a mandrel, but not me. I use my mandrel for sanding and the finishing. Thanks all, Victor

Victor,go ahead and try the delrin,
it should not be affected.I have done, and recommend
soaking the delrin in a jar of lacquer thinner overnight to dissolve ca glue buildup.
No problems,it didn't soften the delrin at all.
I don't think acetone is a lot different.
(Most lacquer thinner is a "cocktail",and I believe some
has a bit of acetone as a component.)
I'll replace your delrin if the acetone kills it.[:p]
GO FOR IT!!

Hey Victor, when I am applying a plexi finish, I only sand to 400 grit. Sometimes, when the wood needs a little more smoothing, I'll hit it with 1500 MM before the finish.

I use bushings between centers to turn it down to size. But then I remove the bushings and and place the blank back between centers and finish without bushings. I do get a little CA run over but it does not have the problem of bushings.

Brewmeister,

Some great folks here talked me into checking the diameters with calipers and forget the bushings for sizing; no need for the bushings for finish sanding if you are used to this. It took a little while before that became habit forming, but now, the calipers are an extension of my hand. LOML will probably put them in the casket with me when the time comes. [:D]

I often sand a blank down about .01 or .006 or .007 too small and build up a good coat of CA. Then sand and caliper check to the right size.

Thanks everyone I will try the Delrin, and a big thanks to Johnycnc who continues to be a huge help. I have been sanding to 320 with good results before the finish, so I don't think it can be sanding to far, and it was not an oily wood. Well tonight I'll try another one, a few more and I'm ready for the pen swap. Thanks All, Victor
