I thought the fine grain in the pen looked familiar. Plantanus is also a form of the Sycamore as we call it here, but I know that you have that type of tree over there too.

You brought out the beauty of the wood well, and it will be a pen that is wanted by all that see it.

I had looked it up also and found that it was the equivalent of Sycamore. Interesting that the European version is thought to be a hybrid of the American Sycamore. I have a nice chunk of it and wonder how I need to cut it to get that look. I think the American version is little lighter in color.

I don't think the Euro-Middle East sycamore is a hybrid of the American Sycamore. The sycamore tree was mentioned in the Bible 600-800 years BC. 2000+ years before Americana.

Looked like bacon before you cut it. If they named it Baconwood, they'd sell more of it. ;)
Hahhahaa well there is a target audience for sure. I think that knife scales would bring out this feature in a better way. Also it would be interesting to experiment with dyes and bold colours. Cheers

I am not an expert on this but i ll try to find out more from one. Wikipedia says that the platanus tree is the sole survivor of its kind and that is found in 8 variations. Its a huge tree when old and is quite normal to have a hollow trunk or similar deformities in the branches; now i understand that this grain provides stability(among other things of course).

Actually is much lighter in colour, that picture is not good at all. I think these are better, cheers

Hello Hank.
It is believed that the 'Sycamore' mentioned in the bible is the sycamore fig ( Ficus sycomorus )
American Sycamore botanically is Platanus occidentalis = Oriental Plane Tree
European Sycamore botanically is Acer pseudoplatanus = Sycamore maple
Theabove 3 trees are not related.

The hybrid of American (Platanus occidentalis) and European sycamore (Platanus orientalis) is known as London planetree. It is the result of American and European sycamore trees planted in close proximity sometimes in the 17th century. And you guessed it... this is believed to have happened in London :)

Arreed, the three are not related.

Trivia:
The sycamore fig was called that because the leaves looked somewhat like fig tree leaves. It did not mean that it was related to the fig tree. Kinda like our "tulip" poplar trees, the leaves have a tulip shape.
