A neighbor gave me some willow oak so I whipped out a couple of bowls, 8.5/9.5 " at their widest. Finished with Howard's FeedNWax. My tool rest was not tightened enough and took and slipped. It took a little of the bark off on one, Itried to salvage it by torching the damaged section.

Title should read Plain Ole Willow Oak Bowls.

Torching the natural edge - Good Idea. Looks GREAT!

Brilliant colors!

Question: What woods keep the bark when dry? Or What is the secret to keeping the bark on? Down here, the bark comes off of most local woods soon after cutting.

I think the key is that the tree be cut in the winter when it's dormant. I have had good success with Walnut and maple. I am not sure what the willow oak will do when completely dried.
