Phoenix airport treats vets right!

I just flew out of Sky Harbor airport here in Phoenix last week, and was delighted to find the new USO lounge was open in terminal 4. When I walked in, they asked for proof of service (I carry a copy of my DD214 because Lowes and Home Depot both give a vets discount). They signed me in, asked when my flight was leaving, so if I fell asleep they could make sure I didn't miss my flight!

Then they gave me a chit good for a cold drink, snack and entree. Coffee was free for the taking. I then got the guided tour. They have the snack bar, a TV room with a BIG tv and a bunch of recliners with a bar and barstools behind the recliners. Then was the game room with about six big screen tvs hooked up to gaming systems. There was a computer room with half a dozen workstations on their own wireless network, a children's play area (soundproofed!) and a lounge area with both recliners and chairs with ottomans and heater/vibrator units. (I understood the "if you fall asleep" line, then.) They have books and magazines you are encouraged to take with you when you board. Their wireless is secured and fast, and the volunteers were very friendly and courteous.

Since I had a 4 hour wait for my plane (husband had a Dr appt so he had to drop me off early), it was all much appreciated.

There is a big USO lounge at Lambert in St. Louis. Very busy place during the holidays and when troops are moving in and out of Ft. Lenard Wood.
 
I have a brother that lives in Phoenix so I have frequented The Sky Harbor USO and it is a good one.

However, If you really want a treat, Check out the USO in the Denver Airport. It is incredible. In fact, some of the business travelers who frequent the American Airlines Admirals Club stopped in by mistake and commented that is was nicer than their lounge. It has a huge are for card playing, t.v. viewing, separate ares for families (quiet), a computer lounge, etc. and on top of that everything was free. One of the extremely helpful volunteers went around every 15 minutes offering ice cream sandwhiches, food, coffee, juice, etc. It is run completely by volunteers and donations. I was extremely impressed. It is the best I have seen in all my travels around the world.

Side note: Instead of always carrying around your DD214 (which can be a hassle) talk to your state DMV about doing what we now do in Oklahoma. Your status as a veteran is now placed on your driver's license with a stamp. As a retiree I always have my retiree ID card, but it comes in handy for those that served and did not receive a retirement ID card.

10 percent on everything. Just take proof of service. Since both my husband and I are vets (we met and married in the service 50 years ago), we always get the discount no matter which of us goes shopping.

We have the dubious honor of having been married at the Arlington National Cemetery chapel. It was the only church for Ft. Meyer at that time. Doesn't everyone get married in a cemetery? Plus, we were married by THE chaplain, US Army. (Same one who buried Kennedy a few months later). I think he was the most nervous man at the wedding. He didn't get many weddings. Lots of funerals....
 
This is the least we as a country can do to thank you and honor you and all vets for their service. Enjoy the perk you deserve it.

From one vet to another Thank you for your service. I was wondering why you carry your DD214, didn't dawn on my that you might not have a retired ID card. For you other vets your spouse might also be entiled (with dependant ID) to the HD discount.

Nope, we weren't career. Back then, if you wanted to have a family, you had to get out. No maternity uniforms! We were both stationed in the pentagon, and later at West Point Military Academy, where my husband was the head of technical services at the library. I was in the WAC back then.
