Pepperd Mill Blanks

Hi Everyone,

Love the new Powermatic Lathe. Wow - what a difference!

I'm looking for Walnut, Maple, or Cherry (or other?) lumber in 3 inch square sizes. Because these are for pepper and salt mills, 13 inch long pieces are needed. If anyone has lumber of this size that can be milled, let me know!

You can buy 3X3 12" blanks at woodcraft. Drill a 1 1/2 hole in the top and glue a 1 1/2 dowel in the top for the tenon. This way the grain from the bottom to the top matches also. Good luck.

Yes - I know. I'm looking for 13 inch blanks - and from someone here who may have milled a tree and has plenty of this kind of wood available. Purchased in bulk, it may be less money or there may be options for trades.

Check with that Aussie, George. He will cut stuff like Olive to order if he doesn't already have it squirreled away. Postage isn't all that bad if you get it sent by boat but you'll need to be patient as it can take a few months. Air is quicker but more dough. Might as well have woods nobody else has if you are selling at shows.

Hi Garrett, I've got 2 planks of 3" thick cherry drying more than 15 years. It's from back home in Pa.
They measure 3" thick by just over 6" wide and 7 to 7 1/2 feet long.
Also have some 3" x 3" x 15" Hond. Mahogany blanks drying for years.

Long ago, I made a beautiful set of olivewood 10" mills. Had them about 4months before they cracked (I knew little about wood, when I started this addiction).

IF you use any wood for peppermills, make sure to allow it to dry (or help it, with a kiln). The crack eventually became nearly a quarter inch split. I was VERY glad I did not sell them, even though they were advertised in a "craft magazine" at the time.

Live and learn--hope you can avoid the same fate!!

It is easier to cut 2" off rather then be short.

Roger, if you go to woodbarter.com They have a lot of 3 x 3's in the "For Sale" section.......very nice looking blanks......
