Pepper Mills...I don't want to kill anyone

I had someone contact me about a custom resin pepper mill. For those that make pepper mills regularly, should I be concerned about making the PR, and it being "food safe"? I'm going to check with my supplier about non-toxic colored powders to use but I can't see it really being an issue if the thing is totally polished. I'd be using the Crush mechanism. Thanks everyone for the help.[8D]

sorry Johnathan, was tempted to do some of those from PSI, but requires too many Forstner bits, I have about 20 bits, but some weren't the right size & I didn't seem like it was worth the trouble. I can't believe they don't make one with a stainless steel or whatever inner container, so you don't have to worry about the "food safe" issue.

Air some, fully cured?? sounds like he's want's to turn a plastic/etc. Am I wrong?? Even with the exotic stuff like Cocobolo & others I don't think that's the way to go. Just my opinion.
 
I'm just throwing this out there.

Would it be possible to drill the hole too big and then fill with some pvc pipe (or something similar)? This would take out the whole food safe problem?

I know he is talking about resin and YES air and cure.

Ever PR need to cure and you need to let the volatile components (that may be trapped inside) to evaporate.

If you turn plastic, you may notice at times that it smells different since the inside may not cure as well as the outside. That is what I know but I may be mistaken.

Jonathon; Hmmm... I believe you are going to cast your own PR? If so, you could just cast the pepper mill with PVC pipe / hole already inside. If it's water safe, it should be food safe.
 
Johnathan, I make pepper mills and my rule is to stay with walnut, maple and cherry. Three woods that are commonly known to be food safe. The food safe issue is very real and the hassle to verify that some material is safe is just a bit much for me. I would contact the manufacturer though. you can find out who the real manufacturer is by asking the supplier for an MSDS on the resin. I am sure there are resins that are food safe, My guess would be that most are, once cured. But I would also be completely certain that not all are. Another thought that came to mind is that this would be a very thick cast. not all resins can be poured real thick so that may be something else you need to check out. the idea of casting it with a pipe already in it is a good one, but you need a pipe that is 1 inch inside diameter.

Or clear cast acrylic tubing.
