I was going to order a set of finishing bushing for Sierra kits from penturnersproducts.com but the site does not come up I don't even get a error message. I was just on the site on Sunday. Does anyone know why it's not coming up now. I'm hoping the site comes back up it's the only place I've found that has the finishing bushings and I want to get a set for when I make the pens for my brothers.

Same here, white screen

Dan I've used something similar to this
CA Pen Finishing 4pc Bushing Set - UHMW (Better then Delrin) - Made in the USA

Works pretty well, you can finish between centers also with no bushings and that works out great too, especially for just a single barrel. I just got a 3' section of delrin rod and going to try to make an extra set or two of the bushings in the link I posted to have around and to try something new

Hmm. Maybe hosting expired??

If you are turning between centers anyway, just put the finished blank on the centers directly. That's all I do anymore. And I have many of the delrin sets.

Warren, I've seen those bushing but I'm not sure they will work for what I want as well or maybe they will. I guess I should have said that I want to use the bushing from sanding through buffing the WTF with MM. I don't want to take the chance of drawing and metal from the bushing in to the blank, I want the pens I'm making for my brothers to be some of my best.

I have sanded, CA'd, micro meshed etc with both the delrin bushings and between centers. Haven't ever done WTF so can't speak to that but they hold pretty well so a friction type finish should work fine on it, don't see any reason not. I have done a plastic polish with them too. I would try one between centers and see what you think. I think the best benefit of the delrin bushings is finishing two barrels at the same time on a mandrel but with the Sierra between centers seems like the way to go. I don't plan on doing any finishing with metal bushings anymore for sure. Try BTC first. If you don't like that shoot me a PM with address. If they turn out ok, I'll try to make you a set of the delrin finishing bushings, they may not turn out so can't promise anything but happy to try just may be a few weeks. *****This isn't an open offer to anyone else, not trying to make these for anyone for the record just a glad you are getting to turn a little present for Dan

I'm not speaking FOR John but, after he got hit by a truck, THAT put him out of work for quite some time. Production slowed down and, customers didn't like that. Complained about his website being out of stock and, didn't get replies to PMs AND, EMAILS ABOUT "wHEN WILL YOU HAVE THESE ITEMS"?

It wouldn't surprise me if the site is no longer in existence. But, it would be worth while to keep trying. Because, Johns Products are by far the best.

go to a plastics supplier.

buy a piece of 3/4" delrin

make your own.

Southernclay also.

I bought delrin rods from GRAINGER ( 15 minutes drive). I have not turned my own bushings yet; but from I have read... UHMW may (not be better than Delrin).

Again - I have not tried this yet, but Delrin still may be promissing? The rods were very inexpensive (12" - $2.00... Not a cost problem - a performance problem).

For me... I'm interested in a material that will not get ridges after turning between centers. I suspect Delrin may be better than UHMW products.

I just had the same thing happen to all my webstores. It turned out that my hosting service did a software upgrade (PHP) to a level that my shopping cart software doesn't support. The resulting errors cause it to source up a blank page.

I upgraded one of my sites yesterday (not a trivial task), and it appears to be working again. I'll be upgrading the others soon - and I hope my code mods (for one of them) will port readily.

Regards,
Eric

delrin will develop ridges if you really crank down on your tailstock.

If my home-made bushings get ridges, I put them on a mandrel with a 7mm tube between them and touch up the surface with a FLAT carbide cutter to get rid of the ridges.

easy peasy.

Hello Dan. Woodturningz has them. Try here: Synthetic Bushings for Glue Finishing - WoodTurningz

Why would you need bushings for sanding and finishing?
Just place the blank between centers.

Les

It comes down to this Les...not all of us are as advanced as you are. Many of us have jobs, families and other responsibilities. When we are able to spend the time that you can in caliper turning...we'll be right on your heels!

That's not a nice thing to say.........I think you owe Les an apology,he was only posting a helpful tip.

For me,I found that the TBC / caliper method without bushings that Les wrote about is the way to go with doing the ca coats & final finishing, especially on the decoupage stamp pens I like to make. I find it's fast and efficient, with the best results in fit & finish.

And I'm not that great of a penturner.

Someone once told me early on,''You want perfection, not your 5 minutes back," and once you get used to it,it doesn't take so long.
