I was contacted by one of the social workers where I donate some of the pens. She had asked me before to do a turning demo next month. In talking with her, she had asked how the kids could participate. Since woodturning can be dangerous, i had really nothing to offer. Today I had an idea. Recently someone posted a pen where his son had painted the tube and it was cast and turned. So I thought maybe this would be something the kids could do, then I could have them cast and turned. Since the tubes would be for larger kits, they could donate/raffle them to help raise money for there camp. Thoughts, Ideas any other suggestions.

That sounds like a good idea. Have the kids paint them, then go home cast and turn them then bring them back and have the kids help assemble them. If your lathe is portable, maybe you could turn one so they can see the process. The resulting pens could then be auctioned or sold. I know Dana Farber in Boston sells all kinds of items that include art from the kids.
 
I think it's a great idea, however, thinking from the children's perspective, I'd want to keep the pen I worked on. I don't know a lot about this particular charity but getting the kids involved in the fundraising may not be the best route.
 
Bruce, the age group of the kids I will be doing the demo for are middle school / high school age kids. most are suviviors and part of the activities they do are arts and crafts for fundraising for their camps. I was thinking of doing the Apprentice Jr. Gents to help keep the cost down and if the kids want to keep them its fine with me.
