Yep... either that or the thing unscrews uneven and hangs up...
What you have to do is take it apart and TIGHTEN the set screw on each gear mechanism...
Works great after that...

Actually the best solution is a PH Design vise from Paul Huffman . . . Long waiting list. I would get on it now . . .

Use locktite to help keep the set screws in place when you re-do them

+1 re loctite on the fittings. I had problems with the Lee Valley version racking until applying loctite to the connecting nuts -- works like a champ since. Never will be a PH vise though so good idea to get on Paul's waiting list.

I have this vise and have used it for several years without any difficulty. I did lock tite the set screws and I clean it after every use. You can also use a wooden clamp to hold the blank for drilling. I am sure that your limited resources can be used for blanks and kits.
