Yesterday I was thinking about what else could I use to psess my pens besides my drill press, I know there is alot of press's out there but the cost of them always gets me I would rather put the money into kits or blanks,,, so this is what I came up with, I havent used it yet cuz I know the handle wont take the presure but thought I would show a picture of it, as soon as I find something stronger for a handle I will give it a try,.

Why not get a bar clamp with a handle that can screw to tighten. You can use it as a clamp and it gives you total control of the pressure and depth you need. I believe several of our members do it that way.

golf club whats that,,,, O thats the thing ya use to hit that little white ball and chase for 18 holes,, lol,, just kidding,, but yes that would be strong enough,, I hope this works will be nice expecially with the holes drilled in the board for different length pens and key chains,,..

That takes all the fun and adventure out of it! Nothing better then designing and making something with your own two hands. I just wish I had that kind of talent!

This is the press i made about a year ago Press.JPG

Have you ever thought about doing it on your lathe?? Just turn 2 Morse tapers out of hard wood and your done. Very accurate and lots of control.

thats the way to go there good heavy steel, not much can go wrong with that, I bet it works grat to, thanks for shareing that,,,
as for useing the lathe to press the pens thats pretty much how I'm doing it now, I am useing my ShopSmith 5 as of now but to much of a machine in my opinion, the little women is gonna get me a mini lathe for Christmas and just looking ahead and thought about a press,, just hope Christmas comes early for me,, lol,,..

Are you kidding,,,, me cut something up,,,, besides, I have wanted one of these "SS" since I was just a wee lad, my grandfather had one in his shop among alot of other machines but I had always liked useing it, although his was the ER virsion, I came across this one and got it for a steal,,,
I do know what you are saying though and yeah it would make an awesome all-round mini, I have been looking at the short one's on ebay "tubes & legs" was really thinking about getting them and another head unit for something along that line, after Christmas I might just do that, then I will have two mini's and the original SS, ..

Nice handi-work! I bet with strong enough hardware, you'll get PLENTY of pressure with that bad-boy. Now all you have to do is mount it on your shop wall and you're all set.

I've found that pressing pens vertically instead of horizontally is way more accurate, and less prone to blow-outs or mis-alignments. It's easy to press something in ****-eyed if it's laying flat and not being supported properly.

That looks very similar to the pen press that there are free plans floating around online for. My dad made me one out of oak using those plans. Yours has some modifications but looks about the same. Looks to be a good design all the same. My oak handle seems to hold up just fine for me.

homebuilt pen press

your press looks very nice. i think your handle will be just fine. imo though your"anvil" (the fixed piece that you press against) is weak. after a few uses you will find that the holes will no longer "hold". a simple mod will get you going again. here are two different presses that i built and use.
