I have used springs from cheap BP pens in a pinch. However, different pens have different lengths and compression.

True Confession: I pick up giveaway pens and save the springs as spare parts. Some giveaway pen springs are too weak for the Penn State pens that I tend to make, but some are good replacements.

I've made a few kitless click pens that use the Pilot G2 gel rollerball refills. The G2 pens are cheaper than just buying the refills and come with a spring.
