My brother is a woodworker. He makes cabinets and other things similar and he does some scrolling, but he doesn't do any turning and doesn't have any interest in it.

Anyway, he read an ad for a cabinet business that is downsizing and was selling various stuff from tools, machines, wood and finished cabinets. So, he figured he would go see what they had since the prices were intriguing. He hoped to pick up some nice wood and maybe a few tools.

He called me and asked if I would like to come and see what he got for a steal of a deal. When he took me to his huge shop, I saw a bunch of wood, a shaper machine, and a couple of cabinets. Pretty nice haul, but he pointed to the corner and there was a big stack (about 5'-6' tall) of sheets. I asked him what it was and he said it's Corian used to make counter tops. There is over 2 tons of the stuff in a lot of different colors and patterns.

I found a very nice blue piece and he said he will make a couple of end tables for us with it. But he also gave me a box of small pieces and wanted me to use them for pens. So I might try making some pens that look like stone.

He is always finding good deals.

I enjoy turning Corian, does make pens a tad heavy. When we redid our master bath I made soap and toothbrush holders out of scraps from vanity top.

Nice!! Corian turns well and usually does not need a finish. Just polish. It also sells very well in pen blank form or bottle stopper sizes.

There are some good ideas mentioned for the use of Corian.

My brother is working on a couple of cutting boards and I read the thread on the cheese slicers. I missed out on the group buy, but I think I'll order a couple and see if he will make me a cheese slicer.

We aren't far from an Amish cheese factory and we sometimes get a block of baby swiss. They make the cheeses right there and you can watch if you care to. They have a 200lb. wheel of cheddar for the grilled cheese fanatic.

A cheese slicer would be nicer than using the knife.
