I don't think this is exactly what you are looking for, but the description "colors and whatnot" reminds me of "Bob in SF" and his colorful pens and bolos

If you look under the "Blank Making" forum there plenty of information also there are also lots of You Tubes about casting blanks.

This is basically called segmenting. As mentioned it is fairly an easy operation if you have the tools. These could easily be made with a tablesaw or a router setup. There are articles in the library that can help you get started. Look under trim rings or just segmenting blanks.
