I've been a PayPal user since they first came out. Ran into my first issue with them today. Went to my local bank ATM to withdraw $340 cash for a cash purchase tomorrow. Everything seemed normal until the ATM told me to take my cash. Machine would not dispense any cash. Receipt printed out said transaction denied. Would not leave the ATM until I called my bank. They said take it up with PayPal if you have an issue. Immediately logged into my PayPal account and money was showing to be withdrawn from my account. Turned in complaint to PayPal & uploaded a pic of my transaction receipt. They started an investigation & said since my PayPal Business card was a Mastercard that the investigation would be turned over to Mastercard to look into further. This matter definitely left me in an agitated state of mind…

How infuriating. Fingers crossed that everything goes well and that you are able to get the money back. Stuff like that is the worst.

Sorry to hear that. It's very unnerving when stuff like this happens. Hopefully PayPal, Mastercard and your bank can get it all sorted out.

I had an incident this summer - I was having lunch with a friend when my phone buzzed - I have my credit card set up that any transactions, no matter how small, I get notified - the phone buzzing at lunch was to notify me that I just purchased a $287 pair of athletic shoes, which of course I had not. I immediately called my credit union, and they placed a hold on the transaction, and locked down my card. Whoever hacked my card (probably with ghost tapping), had tried to make several more purchases within the 10-minute gap between their first transaction and my credit union shutting down the card. My credit union did a fraud investigation and determined I was not at fault, so I never had to pay any of the fraudulent charges. I did have to wait several days for a replacement credit card. It's amazing how much I rely on the card to get gas, groceries, pen blanks, etc.

Stuff like this is why I don't use Paypal anymore. They are not a bank and are not subject to banking rules or protections.
I was with them starting in 1998-99 and used them until 2021 when it became clear there were no protections in place for anyone other than paypal.
I used it to process all of my payments either website or in person sales. I also had several loans through them.
I now use Square and have not had a single problem. The majority of my payment processing is done through Etsy.
I wouldn't recommend leaving any money in a paypal account as you have no FDIC insured protection.
Best of luck

To Join the Thread; I have a separate bank account with a little bit of money in it just for Paypal.

I'm notified on any transactions on my Credit Card.

I have a Pre-loaded credit card with some money in it to tide me over when I get a new Credit card. no tap or other nonsense. Happened 3 times in 2024.

Sorry to hear this. Hopefully all works out for you.
On a side note, I always carry my debit card in a RFID protected sleeve. Plus me and the wife have setup free accounts with Experian, Transunion and Equifax. We keep keep our credit frozen unless we need it.

+1 for separate checking account, with only small balance, that is linked to PayPal and Venmo.

Hopefully it will work out ok. PayPal customer support has been very supportive. Customer support has been in direct contact with me via phone. So at least they are showing initiative in getting this issue resolved. Now just a waiting game on follow-up to see how situation is handled.
