Hello all,

This post is to kick a few ideas around for the second round of the Pass It Forward serial trade.

I didn't want to clutter the existing trade thread while getting some feedback. The ideas are a combination of lessons learned, feedback from others, and random thoughts all my own.

Please read through the ideas and give me your thoughts as well as add any ideas you might have.

1) IAP sponsorship - one of the things I got a lot of positive feedback on was the $5 "entry fee" being a fundraiser for the IAP. A possible modification was to up the fee to $10.

2) Sponsorships - a question was sent to me via PM to see if there is anyway to allow IAP vendors to contribute to the original box via a donation of a discount card or item in return for them being listed as a Sponsor of the PIF. The caveat to this is that no more than one sponsor item could be taken out of the box by a recipient.

3) Made items - the idea is that a completed item (tool, pen, or other item made by a participant) be added to the box with the rule that if it is taken it has to be replaced by another made item.

4) Build a pen - the idea is that pen would be built by the participants with each participant completing a step in the pen. In general it would go something like this:
a) 1st participant would contribute a blank
b) 2nd participant would contribute a kit (retail or custom components)
c) 3rd participant would prep blank (round, drill, glue in tubes)
d) 4th would turn to shape
e) 5th would finish
f) Final pen would be auctioned to IAP membership with proceeds going to IAP.

5) Theme - The idea is that each contribution/replacement has to conform to some theme. Examples include Pens for Soldiers, Non-Profits (Susan Komen for example), etc. Not entirely sure how this would work out, but thought it was an interesting idea.

6) Limits - Limit to only one item can be taken/replaced per individual.

7) Penalties (I'm not comfortable with this one, but it was suggested and want to be fair to those who have PM'd me with ideas) - basically, if a participant delays shipping, they have a penalty to pay to IAP.

8) Allow mid-progress entry - The first time out, you couldn't participate unless you were in the original sign up and met the deadlines. It was suggested that folks be allowed to "buy-in" after the trade gets kicked off and put at the end of the line. I have mixed feelings on this simply because of the administrative overhead.

Thanks in advance for the ideas and I'm looking forward to your thoughts.

Take care,

Suspect there will be higher participation in the next one , which is good , but prolongs the process . Which in turn could perhaps give those at the end a poorer chance at something a supplier might donate .

I would support adding 1-3 to the current process . 4 would work as a stand alone endeavour . Less keen on the other ideas .

Pass It Forward II

I do not think it is a very good idea. I still am waiting to receive anything from the first one from last March.

Craig,

Sorry to hear what sounds like frustration on your part. The box is on it's way to Wayne and there are 7 more folks (including you) left on the list.

The box has taken a bit longer than anticipated on it's rounds due a few hiccups here and there.

But all in all, it seems to be moving along okay.

We had a total of 24 participants. If you figure an average of 1.5 weeks between person (that would include shipping to/from as well as time on the bench getting items swapped out) - that is a total of 36 weeks from start to finish. We are roughly 28 weeks into the contest and probably only one or two people "behind". All in all, not too bad for the number of participants.

In short, don't worry - you have not been forgotten and the box will come your direction.

Hope that helps put things in perspective.

Take care,

Brian

I missed the first one, but it sounds to me like making it a shorter event might work better. This could be done by having multiple boxes going simultaneously, grouping participants randomly into groups of about, say, 10. This works well with sponsorship, assuming that means lots of stuff to start with and divvy up between the boxes. (At 1.5 weeks per person, a chain of 10 people would take 15 weeks - figure 4 months with some delays.)

I was just thinking the same thing. I would like to participate, but maybe have a few smaller groups rather one large group. Maybe group geographically for shorter shipping times or occasionally face to face hand offs.

I like ideas 1, 2, and 6 from your list, Brian. I also like the idea of multiple boxes and/or geographic grouping. On the idea of limits, one item seems a little restrictive... Maybe two items sounds better to me.

I'm also still waiting on the first go 'round, but it's been fun following the thread and seeing what's changed in the package.

I think it went well, 1, 2, &5 are good ideas, I don't care for the rest. The multiple box with regional grouping sounds interesting. I'd be more than happy to help get that going if need be.

Thanks for the great ideas and interest. I especially like the idea of breaking it up into smaller groups and sending them out in batches. Along those lines - anyone interested in being a "starter" for one of those groups?

This is all very preliminary as the first PIF is not done and I really don't want to get anything started till it is finished.

Once we get closer and I have the rules reviewed by our Activity Manager(s), there will be a more formal post and call for sign up.

Thanks again for the feedback and interest.

Take care,

I'd be interested in doing a starter box. I do like 1, 2, & 6 (as I know when I recieved the box this first go around there wasn't much of value left and I had to add a bunch to refill the box - not that it really mattered to me). I also like the regional (or at least shorter list) idea. Actually I'd prefer the shorter list idea because within a region people are likley to have the same types of woods but by spreading the box out across the country/world you are more likely to get some awesome local woods. Just a thought, Bob I.
