My skew has an oval shaft that makes it hard to sharpen. I do have the one-way sharpening setup, but with the skew attachment, it gives a curve to the cutting part, and because it is oval, the platform will not work

i find a curve to the cutting edge actually helps give a better peeling cut to be honest. If you want a straight edge clamp a straight piece of steel to the shaft and run this on the platform .

They make tools that handle rounded edge skews. Look them up. Mayny times those type skews are sharpened by hand on sharpening stones where you are basically holding the bevel down on the stone. If you keep it sharp then just some honing is all that is needed.

and to be honest diamond files and honing is probably a better choice with a skew .

I ended up buying a skew from regular square stock (for a lot of reasons, but the difficulty of sharpening my oval skew was a big one).

That said, if you can get it sharp on the grinder once, you should be able to maintain the sharpness with diamond cards instead of going back to the grinder. My current 1" skew with the standard square profile doesn't really go to the grinder anymore. I just hit it with 10-15 passes on each side with my 1200 grit diamond card and it's great for quite a while.
