Out of the Attic.....well, Basement actually.

Recently, there was a commercial on TV for some car company which featured a large hour glass.

This reminded me of an hour glass I turned over five years ago.
At my wife's school, it was Spirit Week with different themes for different days. One day was classic movies so my wifey and Department coworkers chose The Wizard of Oz.
We put a good bit of work into this one....costuming, decorations, video playing in flat screen (which included the hourglass scene) and of course the prop....an hour glass for the Wicked Witch of the West.

This was early in my return to woodturning and I made this hour glass on my Jet Mini Lathe.
The hour glass is turned from cherry, stained and probably has a friction polish finish. I cut the top from two glass vases, added colored play sand and assembled. Copper foil embellishments on the spindles and top/bottom discs and red Swarski crystals adorn the top and bottom centers.
This was one of those late night finishes so the foil tape joining the glass vials seems rough but worked for the prop.
15" tall and 6" diameter.
I remember at the time being pleased that I could turn 3 spindles that were close matches!
This was a good challenge project.
Wifey was a happy camper and students stopped in the hallway to check it out and watch the video!

Check out the sock monkeys from my early years!
