I've been wanting to get a Tormek for a while now. From time to time, I bid on one on ebay. I came real close to a sweet deal before Christmas on a complete setup.

Yesterday I went out to ebay again and checked out what was there and bid on a lightly used unit that had a few of the accessories and bid $355 + $25 for shipping. I didn't think I would get it, but I did. My problem is that I presently only have about half of that in cash. Luckly I have a discover card that has no interest until November of this year. The first 7 months on the year is not my big selling time. I make most of my sales in the later part of the year. I must sell more pens, I must sell more pens...

Now I also need the horizontal bar, gouge jig and profiled leather strop. Maybe I can make some money sharpening people knives.

I have the Jet version which I guess is close to the same thing (the jigs are supposed to be interchangable) and I love mine. Boy do they get a knife sharp!! OH yeah it works great on skew and gouges too! []

Hi Chris. I have some Tormek parts and I think I have the bar you need if your interested. Let me know and I'll go down and see what I have. I tried to make my own Tormec (didn't work out well[]).

I have had my Tormek for over a half a year and have just started using it for my lathe tools. I love the thing and the concept of what it does and how well it does it. I also have a slow speed WC grinder and the Wolverine system and I am considerating eliminating the Wolverine some day.

I would love to know how many use <b>ONLY</b> the Tormek in their shops.

From those that I've talked to and the threads that I've read, Most keep both in case they need to reshape something.

I to have a SS with the wolverine, but I took my pen gouge to a Tormek demonstration back in November and I felt like I should never use the SS on it again. It stayed very sharp for a long time. I am also not able to get the grind and angle using the Vari-grind on my short gouges.

I use ONLY the Tormek indoors. Yes, I do have a grinder in the garage and use it very occasionally (2-3 times a year, when it's warm outside) to reshape.

Wet grinding seems MUCH more reasonable, you take off less steel, you don't burn your edges AND you don't create sparks that can land in sawdust. I don't think I gain anything from the BRAND name tho', and wet grinder SHOULD be about the same. I use no jigs, sharpen everything "free hand".[8D][8D]

Ed, you are a betterman than me, or have much more steady hands. I used to sharpen my chisels free hand, but my gouges looked like crap and my skews weren't much better. Scrapers and parting tools are one thing, but I would have to spend months working on getting good at an Irish grind on my gouges.

I bought a Tormek (2006 version) early last year and have since added a few things. Their most recent offering, the TT-100 or something similar is a jig used to set up the grinding angles is an absolutely awesome product. The tools fit right in their jigs and work great. Just this weekend I reshaped my fingernail spindle gouge. I had turned it into a bowl type gouge through grinding by hand on the machine, but I used the TT-100 for the setup and WOW, that thing is sharp as heck and it works like new again. I have about 3 or 4 jigs and all are worth every penny I paid for them. (go to Hartville Tool for at least 15% off all Tormek accessories) I would also say that the newer systems have the bar that works both horizonal and vertical. I guess this was a new addition?

Anyway, you won't be sorry.

For those who bought teh Jet, when I was in Rockler after the jet came out, we measured the bars and one was about .010 off from the other. I'm not sure the jigs would be interchangeable, but if they were, Jet seems to have priced the jigs at about the same, so I don't see too much cost savings there.
