Okay I have a oneway talon that i've had for a year or so and haven't actually touched, as usual I've got tons of stuff on the go, today I took it out to actually try it out and figure out how to use it.

is this the proper way to chuck a square piece of wood in?

I am just glad I had a full face shield on.
I've decided to ask here before I try again.

I did it the first way and thats kinda what prompted me to ask this question as it flung and hit the wall. I was trying to figure out if i could chuck it and then try to mill the side.

Either way will work but you better get your tailstock up against it . Either way your depending on a very small area gripping the stock which could be very dangerous .

hmmm then how would you work on the side facing the tail stock?? lets say I wanted to flatten it like you would on a metal lathe?

Don't try any thing like that with out a tail stock and live center up there the wood isn't balanced and will launch. Be safe, a professional turner in Memphis had a bowl explode on her and died after a 2 week coma. It can happen SOOOOOO fast it even made me start wearing a face shield. Once you get the stock round, or turn a tenon that will fit your jaw profiles you can work with out a live center, I've started doinfg off axis eccentric turning and havent had any trouble, but I made sure my tenon fit the jaws of my Nova. A Talon should hold better than my Nova 2.
