Has any one used Olivewood for salt/pepper mills? And in general what woods are good to use for them. I am thinking of woods that are considered to have non toxic properties?

Olivewood peppermills look great. I don't know much about toxicity in woods but there are a lot of different species known to cause allergic or respiratory reactions try running a Google search.

olivewood has been used in practically everything, it is a very good wood choice. It has some antibacterial properties as well but most of all it is very impressive grain. Wood that is dry seldom has toxic problems like that unless it is leeching in some manner.

Years ago I made several Olivewood peppermills. They WERE beautiful!!!

In about six months, every one of them cracked. One crack ran the whole length (10") and opened to nearly a quarter inch.

Moral of the story: Make sure your wood is stable---I have NO IDEA how you would do that.
