Here are some pictures from an olive wood pen i made recently. Its an omega pen kit from taylor's mirfield finished with just oil for a matte look, cheers.

Nice pens. The grain is what sets off olive wood. My wife has some olive wood carvings from Israel.
Thank you. A major factor is that these trees are not irrigated in the mediterranean ( at least not traditionally, intensive crops are different). If you think about it grain is greatly affected by the tree's hardship; these olive trees were not fertilised, irrigated and could be planted in marginal land where no cultivation would occur ( unlike a fruit orchard for instance). Olive trees in Italy, Greece,Israel etc.are grown like this.

It's my understanding that olive trees are not cut down. Some ae hundreds of years old (like some of us penturners). Wood for carving, etc., is from broken limbs that are cut.

That's true, however olive trees need pruning to be productive; mostly branches are pruned and sometimes parts of the trunk ( depending on the state of the tree).
