I've probably done 6 or 8 CA BLO finishes now, and they're getting better. It's not as aesthetically satisfying as a Mylands, and I don't have the finish as nice, but I have to acknowledge its superior durability. I'm inclined to keep using Mylands on some models like the Gentlemen's, but start using CA BLO on twisties.

Only real problem I'm having is getting rid of the faint horizontal rings. I can't see them before I apply the CA, and I've never had with friction polish, so I'm guessing they're CA. I've tried sanding back with the grain and going through all the pads, but they're still there. Anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Carl,my guess and believe me it's just a guess is you are not going back and forth with the lathe off to get the rings out of the finish.

I sure thought I was, but wonder if maybe not enough or at the right times. There are no visible rings when I start applying CA-BLO. After I apply it, I'm not sure what kind of grit I can use without ruining the finish or going through to the wood. I'm pretty much following the process in Russ's videos.

try sanding it smooth with 400 grit, that usually works for me. granted, i don't use blo, just ca, but i get those rings occasionally and 400 will always take care of it, sand with it spinning just to get it going and then finish horizontally.

I haven't done pens for a while.. but just finished a run of 25 game calls and used the CA/BLO finish successfully for the first time... I got the rings you are talking about on some of them, but just ran the 400 through the 12000 MM and took them out... then on to the homemade 3 wheel polish/buffing system and they turned out beautifully.

I think I have found my new finish technique with the CA/BLO finish... especially as I get better with it.

I think it was a combination of things, including the fact that I wasn't willing to go through the pads after applying the CA. There's a little learning curve to this CA-BLO thing, but last couple came out fine.
