Charles, you will be pleased with that lathe. That is what I started with and my grandson ended up with it and my other grandson has that lathe and they are real happy as I was with this product.Good luck.
 
That's a great lathe for the money. 95% of my pens are turned on it and I haven't had a single complaint. It still turns wood and makes nice pens. You will not be dissatisfied.
 
I have to ask:
Why is your "big grizzly having a problem turning something so small?"
Is it time for a check and tune-up?
Is it in need of replacement parts?

Or is it one of the reeves drive variable speed models where the handle sticks out into what might be your work path?

There should be no reason that you cannot do a small item on a larger lather, and many times it should easier, better, quicker, and more accurately, due to the size, mass, and power of said machine.

Other than that inquiry, the new lathe should be good for doing pens and such. And it is a nice little lathe.
