This has probably been answered many times before, but my search didn't turn up anything. In my always looking for new ways to unload and help pay for some of my pen STUFF,I'm going to contact cabinet makers and see if I can whip up a little interest in pens made from the cabinet wood being installed for their customers to be given as a contract signer.I want to use the same stain on the pens as on the woodwork.I'm famular with dye and water base stain, but not sure how to handle the oil stain that most spray on the cabinets.I plan to use the old standby CA/BLO finish.
Thanks for any help. John

Oil stain is usually just BLO and colour pigment. The semi-transparent types use less pigment than the solid colour versions. I find you can to treat oil stain the same as BLO.

I rarely use wood stain, I prefer to use cherry rather than dye maple to look like cherry. The only time I use stain is to create a colour I can't get from a natural wood.
