This has been bugging me forever and has been danced around a little in a number of threads; but never directly answered as far as I know. Concerning the basic MT mandrel peddled by CSUSA and PSI (not the fancy adjustable ones), are they two piece units where the mandrel screws or is pressed into the MT arbor or are they solid one-piece units? If the mandrels screw into the arbor, does anyone know what the threading is for one or the other or both? TIA.

And a sort of George Carlin moment.....Anybody ever wonder what CSU stands for in the pencrafting world? I never could figure whether it was Craft Supplies-UK or Craft Supplies-USA[?][}:)][?]

Thanks, John. Years ago someone posted that the WC thread was 8x32. I never checked it out, just assumed it was correct. 8x32 must be very close to 5mm x .8. They may be "almost" interchangeable??

Think I will check my thread charts and see how close they really are

Hhmmm. I always thought the two threads were #10-32 and 1/4"-28, and that has always worked for me. I just checked, and that is what they are.

This threaded connection has always been a source of run-out in the mandrel. It is simple and works well when both threads are dead on-center and straight with the center-line. A couple thousandths of an inch off in either direction will add up quickly to a wobbly mandrel and out-of-round pens.

The only solutions are that we can accept them as they are, we can learn to tweek and fiddle with them to make them straight, we can keep buying new ones until we get a good one, we can find a custom vendor who makes an accurate one and then treat it with tender loving care, or throw the adapter away and use a collet chuck.

Corrected: I was thinking a #10 thread and wrote #8-32.

That had always been my understanding, too, Russ. I had a brain fart when I posted that the Berea thread was a 10 x 28. That is incorrect. It really is 1/4" x 28tpi. I will correct the bad information; but will need the help of a mod.

As to the WC mandrel, I don't have one so I can't confirm which thread is correct. Seems like I called WC one time and asked them; but I can't remember for sure. Maybe I need to do that again??

The Woodcraft mandrel is a #10-32. I just checked, and corrected my first message. I was thinking 10 and wrote 8. Numbers confuse old people.
