I am getting a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I have cable internet at home without wifi. What do I need to buy so I have the wifi that, if I understand this correctly, is needed?

Thanks for suggestions

A wireless router. Set it up per the directions making sure to change all the passwords so nobody can hijack your signal.

I have a first generation Kindle without wifi and love it. If all you want to do is download books you should be able to do that at McDonalds, Starbucks or any other place with free wifi.

Pick up a wireless router. Unplug the cable from the cable modem where it plugs into the back of your computer. Plug that end into the input plug on the router (it will be by itself on one end). Take the cable that came with the router and plug it into one of the (usually) 4 output plugs on the router and plug the other end into the computer where you took out the original cable.

Usually the router comes with a setup cd that is pretty straightforward. If not, you need to go to http://192.168.0.1 for most routers and set up your security. Change the default username and password so someone can't just login and change your security codes. Use wpa not wep. wep is too easy to hack.

Try to get a router that includes n speed. Just a little faster, but in the long run, much nicer. A lot of routers are showing up on the sale sites like Woot and Tanga, but you could probably do as well at Newegg. If you "want it now" Best Buy won't hurt you too bad. Good luck!

Scott.
