Off site picture hosting?

Because I have a company laptop with fixed settings, I can't see pics that are not posted directly here ( ie; on photobucket etc ). Hence the question. I'm not too worried for myself, cos I can see them on my Kindle. But I was wondering if there is actually any benifit to external pic hosting for either the person posting the pics or perhaps even to IAP? Does it take up seriously less bandwidth for IAP if pics are posted elsewhere?
So, if you have your pics off site, please say why you do it? :confused:

I post some of my photos 'offsite' to Picasa. Why? Easy storage and they can be adjusted (crop, enhanced) fairly easily. I can then post a direct link to IAP and they look much better than those that I have in my IAP album.
 
I store mine in photbucket and being I post pictures to alot of sites I just copy a link. Some site will allow a photo to be shown within the text and some sites either do not allow it or want only ( having a brain fart, what are those small picture you click on and it blows up:confused:)
 
The difference between on-site and off-site image hosting, is that if you store your photo elsewhere and simply link to it, then the bulletin board software does not enforce the IAP photo filesize and resolution restrictions. Therefore, if you want to show pics larger than 800x600 pixels, or don't compress the image down to the required filesize, then you need to use a different image host. If you upload such files via the IAP File Manager, it will resize / compress the image for you - and it doesn't do a very good job.

Knowing the IAP's photo rules, I generally prefer to edit and size my photos appropriately and upload them for local hosting. As long as I meet the size restrictions, my pics appear just as I saved them with no loss of quality.

My dislike of offsite hosting is that if the poster lets their site go, quits it, or decides in a snit to pull the pictures from the site then all their posts and threads become picture less and we all suffer.

Ok, but how much quicker is it to post a link to your pics, than to just load them here? 2.45 nanoseconds:confused::tongue:
I use Picasa as well and once I've cropped the pic it virtually automatically resizes it so that it suits the post rules here.
So far I can't see any benifit for the poster, and I really can't be the only person that has a company machine that won't let them be seen.

The down side is that not everyone can see your pics and therefore you will obviously get less comments:wink:
 
I can send pictures directly to flickr from my photo software, and I can share from flickr to other sites and places. I also only have to keep up with how flickr will use my pictures instead of all the different sites I belong to.
 
I do it either way, and really there isn't a huge difference as long as your original pics were sized correctly.

Also you can direct link from your IAP album and still have the full size embedded pics instead of the thumbnails you get if you upload directly to a thread. So by doing that it negates the differences even more so.
 
I figure if they link to an off site source and I can't see it, the poster did not really want it to seen and I move on.
 
Most (but not all) of my photos that I've shared on IAP are stored in Members Photo Albums and then I link to those when posting in threads. I only recently figured out the uploading attachments option, but prefer the way I've been doing it.

For photos I want to share the full size image, I use Flickr.
 
I really don't like, actually detest, when pictures are hosted elsewhere and linked. Every pen looks exactly the same when they are hosted elsewhere. They all look like a nice little red X. I'm in the same boat and when at work can not view any pictures hosted on Flickr, photobucket, etc. I always attach files which shows as a thumbnail and people just have to click on it to enlarge but the pictures are always visible for those of us that use company computers that have restrictions.
