My first attempt at turning was with a piece of 2x4 and a Stanley wood chisel. Not a good result but got me really interested in turning. Now I"m making pens!
 
While the shovel (or spoon, from another video) is silly, his point that all you really need is a sharp edge is certainly valid.
 
I've seen someone use a lot of different items, he had a sack that contained these "tools", an axe, rabbit trap he used the peg part, pocket knife, hatchet, practically anything that would hold an edge.

I saw a crazy video on Youtube where some crazy Canuck took a car rim then bolted a tree stump to it,
& bolted it to a tractor, and turned it with a Johnson bar.

What's next...a front loader. Just plain foolish, stupid and dangerous.....oh I forgot..it was just for fun.
