I am looking to get a chuck for my Jet 1236. The local Woodcraft store has them (Body & 4 jaw sets) on sale for $179.99. This will be my first chuck. I plan on using it to drill blanks on the lathe and to do bowls with sometime in the future.

Any thing I should be aware of before I buy?

I agree with Lance. I've got two that use on my Jet midi. Great chuck and I wouldn't do without the two of them, especially when I need different jaws during a project. That is a great price with the extra jaws.
If you ever turn a bigger chunk of wood, you might need a larger chuck.

I was looking at that chuck too. About to pull the trigger when I saw that it said "inserts sold seperately." What is an insert? Do I need one?
 
It depends on what lathe you will be using the chuck. The insert converts the chuck mounting threads to the headstock threads. Typically a mini or midi has 1" x 8 tpi (threads per inch). The G3 is threaded for a larger lathe and needs an adapter for the smaller lathes. An adapter usually costs about $20-25. Wherever you buy the chuck will know what adapter you need if you tell them what lathe you have.
This is done so that the chuck can adapt to most any lathe.

The "basic" jaws (2", I think?) will *work* for drilling blanks, but I'd recommend getting a set of pin jaws (~$45) for this purpose.

Mount your square blank between centers, turn round, then insert into the pin jaws for drilling. I absolutely love mine; it's the most used chuck/jaw combo in my arsenal.
 
I use a special G3 built just for the Delta 46-460 (reversible) It's an excellent chuck.

My personal favorite is the Oneway Stronghold but that's a bit much for the midi lathe. Perfect for my Powermatic 3520B though.
