Only been turning for 2 weeks, now. Bought a lathe this weekend, and have already turned out 2 pens and prepped a goblet for hollowing. I need to lay hands on a decent chuck to do the hollowing, though.
For my tools, I managed to lay hands on a really low budget set and a fairly low budget tool set from Harbor freight. Both sets need sharpened, but they came with a decent enough edge to wet my whistle over the weekend.
My first pen turned out like so:
My first goblet, which is still in progress (and no longer has a ring thanks to my 14yo son), looked like so, about a week ago:
