Military guy. Living in South Mills, NC; stationed in Norfolk, VA. Originally from Indianapolis, IN.

Only been turning for 2 weeks, now. Bought a lathe this weekend, and have already turned out 2 pens and prepped a goblet for hollowing. I need to lay hands on a decent chuck to do the hollowing, though.

For my tools, I managed to lay hands on a really low budget set and a fairly low budget tool set from Harbor freight. Both sets need sharpened, but they came with a decent enough edge to wet my whistle over the weekend.

My first pen turned out like so:

My first goblet, which is still in progress (and no longer has a ring thanks to my 14yo son), looked like so, about a week ago:

Those are amazing. I have the same "really low budget" set of tools from HF. For $10.00 you cant go wrong when you are first starting out.

From a retired militay guy, welcome. I to have low budget stuff from HF. My tools are more than likely the same that you have. Good to start withbuut they don't hold an edge very long. Go on-line to PennState Industries and look at some of those tolls (sets) and see if they fit into your budget. They claim to hold up better than ours. But keep turning and sharpen as best you can. What you have done looks great.

Those are amazing.

Thanks. Apparently, I'm a bit of a natural. The guy who taught me how to use the lathe hasn't even tried a ring yet. I did take away a few "lessons learned" from my first attempt. I should look elsewhere on the site to see if maybe I can share my lessons.

I went with both tools. The more costly set, though still not amazing, are HSS and a little bigger overall. I'm sure both sets will do me just fine once they're sharpened. I was using my friends tools prior to getting my own... I've learned quickly what a difference a sharpened tool makes.

Welcome from NC.

It's been a while since I've been in that area, but for some good turning fun, check out the Tidewater Turners -- their next meeting is tomorrow night (2/23/10) at 6:30.

Can't make it. I'll be at The Norva for a Drop Kick Murpheys concert! \m/

A little farther away is the Down East Woodturners that meet in Kinston - a smaller group, but very welcoming.

Have fun!

Kinston is a bit of a trip. I think I'll wait till March 23rd for the next Tidewater meeting.

Welcome from another Hoosier transplant. I am originally from southern Indiana, but lived in Indianapolis for several years. My wife and I are now in Greensboro, NC.

Welcome and thanks for your service!

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome from Indiana. I live in Brownsburg just a few miles west of Indy. The pen and goblet look great. I would say you are definitely a natural.

Many thanks on the compliments and pointers!

I've done a few more pens and a candelabra since starting the thread. Photos forthcoming... I'm really bad about getting photos of my work. lol
