Non pen: Bowling pins

Folks,

I was given a box of bowling pins and would love to strip the plastic shell off them and use them for a coffee table made from an old bowling lane. Has anyone come up with a reliable, easier way to strip the plastic coating off pins to get to the laminated maple center?

Someone warned me that it might not be as easy as it sounds as the plastic melts real easy gumming up the works.
