Summer in Canada is already short enough and I found out today that mine is going to be shortened by two months. At least it will feel that way, I had my knee scoped on friday and my surgeon told me today that I need extensive repairs.

I finish school (second career training) in June so I am expecting to start July by having an Osteotomy done. Two months of no wheight on that leg is not a fun summer or a good start to a new career.

I won't even be able to turn thru the warmest months of the year, but I won't be doing the yard work either.

Enough of the good and bad, has anyone gone thru this who can give me an idea what it will be like?

Think Hammock/comfy lawn chair, shade tree, cold drink, whittling knife and wood. Assuming you are not on reality altering pain drugs use the time wisely.

If it were me (and it isn't) I'd be asking for a 2nd opinion from a different Dr!
 
If you take Macks advice make sure it's a different Dr. because I asked the same Dr. for a second opinion and he just told me I was ugly to. I hope all goes well with the surgey and recovery for you and your family.
 
I have no experience on Osteotomy, but I had my left knee replaced 3 years ago and it kept me off my feet for 3 days, was golfing 2 weeks later. Not quite as good when I had my right knee replaced last year, it was still too cold to golf.
 
Well being that I am still in the airforce my treatment options are somewhat limited. As for the surgeon he is regarded as being one of the best ones in the city if not western Canada. My wife who is an RN has confidence in his skills and judgement so that is good enough for me.

It will be the 4th operation on that knee, I trashed it pretty hard when I was young and dumb.

Good luck, I have had 10 knee surgeries, all on the same knee, hence the name "gimpy"young and dumb too,
it's called football.....

anyway I had 3 knee replacements in 4 yrs, with my last one
a year ago.......

good luck and listen to the dr and your wife
 
If you have a mini lathe then maybe you can figure out how to use it sitting down. There has been a lot of info on turning sitting down lately. Maybe a search will turn up some good information. Anyway, good luck with the surgery and I hope you have quick and complete recovery.

Gimpy, I never could make the football team but the base Rugby team took me and let me have some fun (and pain).

Don there is no way I could sit down at my lathe easily, it is a Vicmarc VL300 long bed, but I might be able to do a pen or two after a little while (standing on one leg).

Chuck it may tickle a little but I doubt that it will make me laugh, but crying may be an option ; )

Haynie's options sound good to me, I may actually have time to read some of the books in my woodworking library.

Mack and Kenny, trust me when I say that I would never walk into this without getting all the info possible. I know my knee is about to give out again and I have seen the MRI pics and the Scope Pics and it isn't pretty. My only real options are this operation or a total knee replacement, and that is something my doc , wife and I are all shying away from if possible.

Thanks for all the good thoughts and ideas everyone.

I would love to have a VL200 sit down lathe but there are 2 problems with it .... I can't afford one and I have no room to keep it.

The bigger hiccup is it is going to delay the "lolly shop" gathering by at least a year now : (
