No finish question actually....

Was mentioned in a topic about a cedar pen, if you could still smell the aroma from it.... And this got me to wondering......dangerous thought while trying to sleep.

How would you go about not finishing a cedar blank?


?Just sand through 4k grit and be 'done with it'?

tried this before with no finish in no time at all the pen looks dirty the aroma goes away fast not sure it worth it

The unfinished wood will absorb moisture, oils from your hands. Dirt gets embeded into the surface so it looks dingy and unappealing very quickly.

Sounds like I need to finish it, then get a can of that 'cedar smell' and spray it...

Some call getting our body dirt and oil on a bare wood, and rubbing it in with use, as being something nasty and undesireable. Others call it a "natural patina".

It's amazing when we call it a "patina" all of a sudden it is desirable and exotic...here is a non pen example.

During the summertime my shop sells firepits, they are a "patina" finish AKA they are rusty! They come from the manufacturer rusty and the sit out side rusty, but for $275 they are a fine well made steel firepit with a "Patina" finish Isn't it fun to twist reality with words:biggrin:

Also to be considered is that the usual cedar is so soft that it will dent and mar quite easily without a hard finish.
