I've wanted to make one for some time, not really sure why.
I don't do much hand turning, so this was a nice departure from working on the metal lathe.
Macassar ebony that has seasoned 20+ years. Finished by coating with ultra thin CA until it stopped soaking in, then sanded and polished.

Very nice! It looks like issued equipment from the 70's in my area. I have a small collection of night wood and plastic type sticks I've gathered over the years. Yours resembles one I was gifted back in the early 90's from an older officer, only it's a hardened plastic/rubber material. I always wanted to make one myself but just never did. Yours looks great! Very inspiring!

Thanks John, that was the plan. I wanted it to look like a classic night stick. I found some dimensions online. I also came across an old FBI paper that covers proper use. There's more to it than grab it and swing 🙂

Nice piece of work. Thanks for sharing the finish.
Friend was a shore patrol, Navy. Said an application across the shins worked wonders for a person's negative attitude. Any of you veterans watch an MP or SP stand for hours and twirl their night stick?
Edit: Didn't find what I was wanting. Ralph Meeker was in a TV series about military MPs. Opening scene had him twriling the night stick. My father said he saw them stand for hours and twirl their night sticks.

I trained with one in the Academy but after getting to my first office, I was issued and trained on the PR-24. Carried the same one for my entire career. Lots of memories in that stick!

That is a very nice looking night stick! Looks like my first night stick in USAF. First duty station was Shaw AFB in SC. We were not allowed to carry nightsticks stateside as SP. Issued mace instead. Sent to Okinawa, Japan. Mace not allowed, but issued night stick which I carried for 4 years.

I worked with a guy who was a Navy Shore Patrol. Skip said a good rap across the shins would bring the biggest drunk down to his knees.
