I have been getting some private messages about this years event, so want to keep everyone informed. Have many of you noticed that the AAW is having a major shakeup with the liability insurance coverage for Local Chapter sponsored events? Well, it boils down to our club not having any liability insurance coverage for non AAW members. It was a condition of use for the union hall last year. So any ideas or suggestions?
I plan to contact some independent insurance agencies, and look into a policy for 2 days. That will mean the event will no longer be free. I'm also going to contact the guys at the Champaign Carpenter's Hall and see what they did, or possibly move it back there. Any other ideas or input? Anyone ever gotten coverage like that? If so, what company did you use? The Mid Atlantic guys are meeting at a Woodcraft, and the event will be covered under the Woodcraft franchise owners liability policy.
In conclusion, MPG 2013 is still on, but it just means some more organizational work and please be open to some possible changes. When I get answers, I'll let everyone know. Please share any info and ideas you might have. Thanks, Rich

The art & craft show in Frankfurt, Il demanded insurance, when we did it years ago.

They offered a 3 day policy, for those who were not insured.

Might want to contact them and see who underwrote that policy---probably a local insurance guy---seems to me the coverage was in the $100 range for the 3 days.

If you are not familiar with it, the show was run by the Chamber of Commerce and takes place on Labor Day weekend.

Liability insurance coverage for 2 or 3 day events has been available for many , many years. When I was in the Jaycees in the late 1960s early 1970s we sponsored a couple of events each year where we bought liability insurance for our own protection. It seems the cost was usually related to the event and the danger of injury to attendees.

Sad to hear it might not be free. The Hall had covered the liability issue so no extra insurance was needed. I had looked into insurance though and if needed, I felt it was a nominal premium. If I recall it was around $110.00 with a $1 million max on claims and replacement amount on any property damages with a specific clause for the Hall. Since I considered the MPG to be like a big party I was hosting, I set each year an amount that would cover expenses to keep the event free. If insurance is needed, drop me an email.

The Carpenter's Halls in this region recently went through some reorganization so things have changed a bit. Besides, to use the hall here, it needed to be signed out by a member who must be at the given event the whole time. A good friend of mine who turns as a hobby did this for the MPG. It helped he was VP of the Hall also. If ya need some help let me know.

Free is great, but a fee is much better than closing down. How much would be needed to cover the insurance? Just making the human connections was priceless, the demos and the vendors made it a very valuable experience to me.

Have you considered other venues? The gun club I belong to meets monthly at the local VFW post. Also K of C halls are an option.

If the cost is in the $100 range that is not really an obstacle. You could pass the hat at the meeting and get that much donated. I think that would be better than charging a fee. I have always had good luck with the "pass the hat" approach when the folks are appreciative of the meeting. But then us minister types are used to taking offerings!

Yikes, I better pay attention here. Looks like there will be an AAW method to get the insurance. My AAW chapter club is the official sponsor for MPG, and we are about to put the insurance option before the membership. I put out a tip jar last year to cover expenses, that worked very well, but it looks like I will be asking for a small admission charge this year. More details to follow, stay tuned.
