Just got into pen turning and I am trying to work on sharpening. I am looking at a set of diamond plates and cones that seems to be a decent deal. What have people's experiences been with these? Other then that I have a one speed grinder with a gray wheel and set up to do scary sharp on planer blades. Any ideas or thoughts? Thanks for your help!

Diamond plates and cones remove metal quickly and smoothly. They might not give you the mirror finish you are used to on plane blades after burnishing, but need not be that sharp either. If you can sharpen plane blades, you should have no trouble with anything else. Just takes a little practice. Jim S

When you get the chance, you might look to replacing the grey wheel, but one can sharpen high speed steel on a grey wheel. An aluminum oxide or seeded gel wheel will make it easier to control and get a smooth edge.

I hone with 600 diamond and cubic boron nitride plates. Alan Lacer for the diamond as he sells one with round edged with diamonds. CBN came from Dave at D-Way Tools.
