I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. I am some what new to pen turning but not completely new to wood working. I started do some wood working in 2001. I was at a Sears store looking at some non wood working tools and saw a little kit to make a music box. My wife liked it and said I should buy it. So then I had to buy a table saw and a few other tools to make the music box. I went from the music box to making some furniture. In the past few years I have refaced my bother's and my parent's kitchen cabinets. Anyway back to pen turning, I bought starter kit from PSI about 2 years ago and a Wilton mini lathe from Menards. I turned a few slimlines and kind of forgot about it. My dad turned 60 this past month and I was looking for something to give him that might mean a little more to him then some store bought gift. But I am unemployed at the time so I couldn't go too crazy with the gift. Then I remembered I still had a few slimline pen and pencil kits left over. So I ran to the local Rockler store and picked up some acrylic blanks that were his favorite color. I turned those and they came out pretty well. But now I seem to have an a need to turn a bunch of pens. I had forgot how much fun I had when I turned the first few a couple years back. I have been looking through this site for the last week or so and reading lots of good info. I have also talked to a few local people and am planning on getting together at the next meeting. Any way I just wanted to say hello to everyone.

Thanks every one for the welcomes.

Jamie,

Welcome. Have you got your eye on a bigger/more expensive lathe yet??:biggrin::wink:

I don't have my eye on any paticular lathe but the idea has crossed my mind more then a few times. At the moment I am unemployed so it will be a while before I can afford to buy a new lathe, but I am sure it will happen at some point.

Welcome from the southeast side! Saw your posts about attending one of the local chapter meetings. There are a bunch of great guys and gals involved in pen turning around here. We just struggle a little getting together! Hope to see you in January.

Thanks for the welcome. I am hoping to meet some of the local guys at the next meeting. I am sure I can learn a lot from every one at the meetings.

Welcome Jamie! Good to have you here. I'm glad you've already hooked up with some in your area's local chapter.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome Jamie! This sure is fun. I go through the 'make some pens', wait some months, make some quite often because of work! It is fun!
