Welcome from Washington. Need a little mire info, What all are you looking at turning? Just pens or bowls to baseball bats. A lot of people like the Delta's or Jet lathe's.

Get the biggest and best you have room for and can afford. Small things can be turned on a large lathe but large things can't be turned on a small lathe. You will probably get several suggestions.
Welcome and...
Do a good turn daily!
Don

Welcome from northern Ohio. I have a Jet and love it. It's 16 years old and still works great. Mini lathe is great for pens, pepper mills, small bowls. Consider a midi or larger fro other work.

I second that! I have the Jet1220VS and it works great for all my needs, however, when I need or want to turn anything large, I have to go to Don's house and use his behemoth Powermatic!!!:biggrin:OOps, shouldnt have said that out loud, now he will know my plan!

Anyway, welcome to the group!

I have two Delta 1440 and three Jet mini lathes and love all of them. Looking for a Oneway now. They are the higher end lathes. Try out different ones to see which you like best.

Welcome Randy, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/library/general_reference/Getting_started_in_pen_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.

I will tell you buy a good one as this is truly addicting. I purchased a harbor freight variable speed for about 100.00 or so and is seemed to work great at first but very quickly i learned the limitations and shortcomings. For example the way the tailstock tightens it puts pressure on the pen mandrels and you WILL bend them eventually, no matter which kind you buy... trust me lol. However they are replaceable. Another thing is the limitation of size, no large bowls or the like on this one. The main attraction to it for me was the price but you do get what you pay for. In summary i guess I would echo the others get the best one you can afford and have room for keeping in mind IT IS ADDICTING you will want to do more with it than you think. Good luck
