new wheels

I am working on building a bigger steady rest for my big lathe.
Bigger wheels are the first thing I looked for-----heck I could not find what I wanted so they will have to be custom built.
I bought some 2 1/2 inch round Delrin and it showed up today.
Bearings will be the next thing to buy.
I may just build two of them and sell one

Hey Gary,
Being the new owner of a 4224 I'd certainly be interested in your design. The problem I've seen with some of the rests is that they interfere with the use of a laser in conjunction with a hollowing system. Also, why these wheels and not the skate wheels?

How big a wheel are you planning on? I've seen quite a few home-brew steady rests built with roller blade wheels which are about 3" in diameter. They seem like a good choice to me......soft enough not to mar your work but hard enough to wear well.....and rreasdily available, right off the shelf.

Old rule-----Bigger is better
Skate wheels will only take so much.
This is just somethimg I am playing with---should take me 6 months or longer to get it done.

Gary, Have you tried roller skate wheels?

I have bought used inline skates at the thrift store, just for the wheels. I just pick out the ones that are the best looking.

Paul the big difference----Have you ever turned a 350 lb hollow form.
Those wheels will not stand up (pun intended) to the weight.

Wouldn't the delrin "burnish" the wood, or put a groove in it?
I would think rubber or silicone wheels would be better? (mark or score the wood less?)

I dunno, I'm a newbie bowl turner, but I would think softer wheels would be more suitable.

Just to let you now that is not delrin it UHMW,I bought some from the same guy.Turns like butter and fun to watch the one long string that comes off as you turn.Not fun to drill you need to keep the heat out.Victor

I made one using wheels that go on an escalator. I originally got them to make a water wjeel for my koi pond. They are sealed and have a rubber wheel. No longer have the steady rest as I was offered a good price.
