I think the grain would have matched up better, If I didn't use about a 1/2" of the blank for threads.

Really? I have seen many grain-matching glue-ups in wood where you could not find the seam between the two parts either before or after the glue-ups. Well-made bandsaw boxes are but one example. I just bought the wood to make a rattle where I plan to use two hidden seams. In many ways, wood is more forgiving than metal.

That said, this is an incredibly impressive demonstration.

I wonder whether they would accept an invitation to flatten the backs on my chisels and hand plane blades? Sub-micron flatness. Total engineering overkill. Wouldn't that be sweet!!
