Hey everybody, new to pen turning and really enjoying it. A friend of mine gave me an old harbor freight lathe, so that I could try it out before I spent money on a lathe I might not use. I AM HOOKED! So far I have made 3 pens some mistakes but really getting into it.

Welcome Rudy!

Jump right in with questions or post some photos of your pens. There are a bunch of great people here. Great sources for info as well as supplies. Spend some time looking through the Library (IAP library that is, link above)... lots of good stuff there!

Always glad to welcome another Texan. We have four diffferent IAP chapters in Texas. Depending on where you are located at if one of them is close to you check it out. You will be surprised at what you can learn attending the meetings.

Welcome, Rudy. I don't know where you are in Texas. I hear it's "big" down there. But there are a great many penturners down your way with Local Chapters. You might want to check out that forum.

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.
