Well, I finally got a dust collector. A guy I work with actually had it and didn't even know it till I got there. It is a Jet 1100 canister dust collector. Not sure about the canister since I have never seen it mentioned here before. It has the plastic bag bottom, but I am going to see if that can be changed out to a regular jet bag (if I need to). It also came with a lid thing that goes on a trash can that will collect chips before going to the dust collection unit (still need to read up on how that works). Also came with the remote control system with 2 remotes. The unit has a total of approximately 45 minutes to an hour on it. Original bag has about 1/4 inch of dust in it. So hopefully this is a good unit for the 250 I paid for it. He upgraded to a huge, probably 9 ft. tall 2hp cyclone unit. He is one of those that never builds nothing, but buys all this new stuff for his shop. It's amazing all the high dollar equipment he has and has never used it.

Dustin,
We have basically the same vac. I love the plastic bag and would never switch to the cloth. The cloth allows too much dust to come out. Also the cannister has like a .5 micron filter on it. It does a great job for us. The one thing I will tell you is to take the cannister off every once in a while and use a shop vac to clean it real good. The arm that you turn to slap the fins does alright from time to time but you will notice a suction drop off after prolonged use. For $250 you got a great deal and then some. Check online for your bags as you can find some pretty cheap from time to time.

Ours is set up on 110 as the only 220 I have in the shop is dedicated to the cabinet saw. Our lathe hose run is 25' and works great. The only thing I would do different is put it in a place that is easier to get out and swap the bag. Also be careful letting the bags fill. When full and I do mean full, they will weigh in at 75-100# of saw dust. Makes dome great mulch but the neighbors don't like it on a windy day! [:0]

All it will make is cat litter around my house since my neighbors cats crap in my flower beds already. Also anyone that wants to chime in on ducting would be great. I was thinking 4" pvc, but don't know much about it.

We have the harbor freight 2hp dust collector with the canister conversion (actually two of them, since we set up a shop at our house and Cathy's father's). We like them much better since we converted them to the canister and plastic bags. It has greatly reduced the dust in the shop and getting rid of the accumulated saw dust much less of a pain.

Regarding ducting, in Cathy's dad's shop we went with 4" pvc down both walls (at the ceiling) with drop downs for each tool station plus a floor sweep. The drop downs end at blast gates. From the blast gates to the tool, we use flexible hose.

We are currently redoing our system in our shop and I'm going to change a couple things that we don't love about his system. I don't like that we used 90º tees and elbows in his shop. This likely results in greater resistance and a loss in suction. Therefore, I am going to use teh better flowing san-tees where the drop downs meet the runs.

That being said, we're not going to have drop-downs, either. My wife didn't like how the drop downs looked and was concerned that they could hinder the sale of our house (if we decided to sell). As it turns out, our house is brick with a crawl space. The crawl space wall is built out of cement blocks. This results in the garage having a a ledge a couple feet off the ground and finished walls to the ceiling. I am going to run the dust collection tubes along this ledge with 'drop ups' to each tool station.

Dustin,

I have the exact same Jet dust collector. The canister is great...you don't want to swap it out for a cloth bag...that will be a downgrade. Also, don't wait until the bag is full to the brim before changnig it. As someone else observed it'll be heavy. Also the reduced empty volumn in the bag causes the heavier sawdust to accumulate in the upper portion of the collector. At $250 you got a great deal.
